8 Tips to Make Your Small Bedroom Amazing!

A small room isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you know how to maximise your space it can turn into a very cosy little place. When the space is limited, every little detail counts but there are always some tricks you can use to make it better. Here are a few tips to maximise the space in your small bedroom.

1. Declutter

The first but most important step is to declutter. Try to keep your room tidy and organised. A cluttered room means a smaller room. Try to keep the floor as clear as possible, a large rug will make the space look smaller.

Get rid of everything you’ve been holding on to in the hopes that one day it will come handy. If you haven’t used it in the past 3 years, you probably won’t use it ever again. Letting go can be hard so start slowly. Maybe start by moving what you’re not sure about to another room or a part of your closet, if you still don’t use it in the next month, then you know you’re ready to let it go. Donating to charity will also make you feel great. Maybe your old clothes will find a home with someone that needs them more than you do.

2. Under bed storage

If you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist, right? Under-bed storage is the best way to smartly hide away things that you might not need for a while. Store big winter coats, books, suitcases… it won’t take up your limited space and it won’t look messy either.

3. Use mirrors

This one is more about aesthetics but it can go a long way. Using mirrors will make your room look bigger than it is and if you place a light source in front of it such as a lamp or candles it will maximise the effect of light and create a really magical effect too. You can also place a mirror in front of your window to spread more natural light and create the impression of a second window.

4. Get a Compartment organiser

Small space needs organisation. Using compartments in your closet and drawers will help you store more things and also find them easily. It will make organising your space and tidying it up much easier. Ikea have some really good and affordable clothes organisers, have a look here.

5. Light colours

Dark colours absorb the light and make the room look smaller. Using a light colour palette such as off-white, cream, light-blue and green will make the room feel lighter, brighter and bigger. You can also paint your wall mouldings a lighter shade for an impression or larger walls. If you aren’t a professional painter, then a house painting service can be hired to do the painting for you. Considering how much the supplies cost and factor in your time, you may end up spending less money (and spending less stress) than if you were to do it yourself.

6. A smaller bed

It’s amazing to have a hotel king-sized bed but let’s be honest, often we don’t have the space for it and we don’t really need it either. Downsizing to a double bed will save you a good few centimetres and will make your room more spacious and airy. You will gain some more storage space as well! When choosing a new bed, don’t forget to look for one with drawers or storage space underneath.

7. Use your walls

Walls can be a place for storage too. Add some shelves above your bed or your desk and instantly you will free some space on your night stand tables or on your desk. You can place objects on the shelves that were previously taking up space without adding too much furniture to your room.

8. Remove big furniture

Remember less is more. Try to find pieces that have a lot of storage but that don’t take up a huge amount of space. Sometimes even if it’s more expensive, it could be worthwhile looking into made-to-measure furniture that fits perfectly into your space and that won’t leave you with empty corners. Also you can use multi-functional furniture such as folding tables, sofa beds and chests/night-stands. Your imagination is the only limit when it comes to interior decoration!
